protection (physical need)There are multiple reasons why people dress for protection. Whether it is because of; Weather, Environment, Occupation, or because of "Enemies" these factors play a major role in what we wear. We must dress for our physical protection, for example on the left I chose articles of clothing that would be appropriate to protect ourselves during the cold winter seasons. I chose snow boots, a heavy duty coat, scarves, hats and cardigans to personalize gear to keep me both warm and cute.
adornment (psychological need)Another reason why people wear clothes is for adornment which is a psychological need. To customize our wardrobe to personally fit our aesthetic, can create a positive psychological feeling about ourselves. Another reason is to satisfy our cultural expression. For example headdress, body paint, "folk costumes," etc... On the left I chose this spring dress, accessories and shoes because these pieces all contribute to making me personally feel better about myself and my own well being. I like keeping my wardrobe more on the simplistic and neutral tones.
identification (psychological need)Another reason why people wear clothes is for their identification. There are a couple ways that would result in someone wearing clothing for identification such as uniforms for school and dress codes for work. My example on the left is one way I chose to identify my roll and what college I will be attending. It acts as symbolism to make it known that I am a part of their community. Other ways can also be work uniforms, but I chose to use my college merch as a way to identify me instead.
Status (social need)Under psychological needs, people wear clothes for their social status. This can be shown by covering of the body to meet the code of decency for the person's society. In this case I chose business casual outfits for the work environment. It is not revealing and meets the dress code but still shows a level of professionalism. I stuck with more neutral colors because when there is a clash of different bright colors it you seem less professional. Personally, I think a good pair of heels and properly fit blazer jackets can make you look both flattering and powerful/independent.
modesty (social need)Lastly under psychological needs, people wear clothes for modesty. This can be shown by covering of the body to meet the code of decency for the person's society. In this case I chose to go the more traditional route. I am half Chinese and half Irish, whenever we celebrated Chinese new years or even a wedding it is modest to wear a traditional Chinese red dress or a coat like the ones on the left.
